What are TERMITES?

OUR PROFESSIONALS
Termites swarm in the Long Island area between March and May as the weather warms. Swarms are reproductions of the colony, and the swarming lasts several days. Though swarmers may no longer be present, the colony will still actively feed on the cellulose in the structure. Termites cause more damage in the United States than hurricanes, floods, and fires combined. They are highly secretive in nature and not easy to find unless they are swarming.

Some indications are:

  • Sand tubes about an inch in diameter on exposed wood or foundation
  • Sand visible between two pieces of wood
  • Dots of sand appearing on wood or sheetrock which, when wiped off, reveal a small hole
  • Tracks or veins appearing behind sheetrock
  • Finding clear wings

Termites eat the insides of beams. Many times the wood looks sound but, when probed with a screwdriver, it crumbles like paper.

Some areas to look for termites are:

  • Around concrete porches
  • In chimneys
  • In garages
  • In the slab areas of houses
  • Where a slab meets another type of foundation

We offer various services such as bank mortgage inspections, engineer inspections with Termite Treatment & Inspections, free estimates, free second opinions, damage repair, wildlife trapping, and a late night restaurant service. Condominium boards and management are welcome. We guarantee exceptional, affordable prices with personalized service.

LIST OF SERVICES WE OFFER :

Chemical Treatments
Chemical treatments consist of placing a chemical barrier by means of drilling, trenching, and rodding in and around a structure. It is the favored means of controlling termites. Even though today’s chemicals are not as persistent or effective as those of yesteryear (chlordane), this is still the preferred method of treatment. Issues such as construction, wood or tiled floors, pipes, and environmental factors, such as wells and high water tables in many cases, preclude chemical treatment. Concerns over chemicals make some homeowners uneasy about having up to several hundreds of gallons of chemical solution inserted around their home.

Baiting

This is the newest tool in the fight against termites. Baiting does not attempt to preclude termites from the structure, but rather to eliminate the colony itself. This is done by placing monitors with wooden pieces into the ground every 10 to 15 feet around a structure and checking them regularly. Once termites find the wood, a bait matrix is placed into the monitor, which the feeding worker termites consume. The two leading systems, Sentricon and Exterra, use growth regulators to stop the worker termites from molting (shedding their skeleton), thus killing them slowly. As the workers die, the colony dies. The workers feed the other clusters of termites and groom them for parasites. This system is safe for children and animals, because the monitors are locked and secured. The system used by our company is Exterra

Wood Treatment

In some cases, termites can be stopped by treating the wood itself with a boric acid foam spray or injection. The product used by Our Termite Treatment Company is Bora-Cure™.

Mechanical Alteration
Many times, making changes in the construction of the house can stop termites. Removing wood from soil contact, changing the grade, rerouting gutters, etc., can make the difference.

WHAT ARE DRYWOOD TERMITES?

Drywood termites as the names says live on eating drywood in old homes and abandoned furniture.
This classification of termites mostly look white in color like the following picture

Here are Drywood Termites busily feeding on wood.

HERE ARE SOME AMAZING FACTS ABOUT DRYWOOD TERMITES THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND :

  1. By their name, drywood termites nest above ground and do not require moisture and soil contact. These termites infest on dry wood and mostly feasting on wooden furniture and fixtures.
  2.  Their swarm is significantly smaller than subterranean termites which could start with 50 workers and growing to 3000 in over 15 years.
  3. Due to the colony’s size, a considerable structural damage to properties could take years to happen however giving a blind eye to early signs of infestation could prove detrimental later on.
  4. The Western drywood termite is found primarily along the coastal regions.
  5. They are active throughout the southwestern states, mostly populating: California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada. Drywood termites do not live in the ground and do not build mud shelter tubes.

Drywood termites fly into a structure and infest wood directly. It isn’t uncommon for the drywood termite to re-infest old termite damage.

  1. You’ll commonly find them around: Window frames, eaves, attic space, sub-area crawl spaces, at the rafter tails, and other wood trim.
  2. When the colony is approximately 4 years old the queen will trigger a swarm, releasing hundreds of termites from the colony to re-establish new nests.
  3. Typically, they swarm about mid-day on sunny, warm (80 F) days. Their swarming season occurs during September and October.
  4. The signs of infestation include: Scattered wings, piles of fecal pellets, soft or damaged wood, live or dead swarmers’.
  5. Drywood termites eat across the grain of the wood, creating chambers or galleries. Drywood termites are slower then their cousin, the subterranean termite, nonetheless, they can cause severe structural damage.

"My husband and I first used Leda Termite Management to do a pre-purchase termite inspection in February 2011. We were looking to buy a house in a well-known termite area and so we wanted the best in the business to check our potential new home for termites. Doug performed the inspection and was professional, informative and very thorough in his check of the property. From fences to roof cavity, all areas were checked for termite activity or potential threats. Doug then took the time to personally explain all his findings and recommendations before leaving. His report arrived promptly and again was meticulous.
We were so happy to have found and used Leda Termite Management on that occasion that we have since called upon their services two more times.
For anyone looking for a trustworthy, friendly and qualified team to do their pre-purchase termite inspection we strongly believe that Leda Termite Management in the only answer."

About Termites Please?

When buying or selling a property, it is important to conduct a building and pest inspection for termite damage or activity. Pre-purchase inspections are intended to identify termite activity and any risk areas or problems relating to pest control and building structure.

When  Termite Management performs a pre-purchase pest inspection or pre-purchase building inspection, you can expect a full and thorough inspection of the inside and outside of the property. After the inspection is complete, you will receive a written report which will:

PRECAUTIONS TO TAKE BEFORE BUYING A PROPERTY OR SELLING

  • Advise if there is any termite activity, termite damage, fungal decay, or borers found on the property.
  • Advise whether there are any protective measures against termites and pests already in place, what they are and their life expectancy.
  • Detail any risk areas that are conducive to termites.
  • Detail any building faults or structural damage.

What is Barrier Treatment?

Barrier Treatments

A barrier treatment is a ‘chemical treated zone’ which is installed around the outside perimeter of a house. Installing a barrier treatment typically involves trenching the soil areas against the outside walls of a home down to the footings, then flooding the trench with chemical and filling the trench with treated soil.

Where there is concrete against the outside wall of a house, 12mm holes are drilled through the concrete at approximately 150mm from the wall and 200mm apart and chemical is injected under the concrete to treat the soil.

This creates a complete treated zone around the house, protecting it from a termite attack.
