Chemical Treatments

Chemical treatments consist of placing a chemical barrier by means of drilling, trenching, and rodding in and around a structure. It is the favored means of controlling termites. Even though today’s chemicals are not as persistent or effective as those of yesteryear (chlordane), this is still the preferred method of treatment. Issues such as construction, wood or tiled floors, pipes, and environmental factors, such as wells and high water tables in many cases, preclude chemical treatment. Concerns over chemicals make some homeowners uneasy about having up to several hundreds of gallons of chemical solution inserted around their home.

Baiting

---

This is the newest tool in the fight against termites. Baiting does not attempt to preclude termites from the structure, but rather to eliminate the colony itself. This is done by placing monitors with wooden pieces into the ground every 10 to 15 feet around a structure and checking them regularly. Once termites find the wood, a bait matrix is placed into the monitor, which the feeding worker termites consume. The two leading systems, Sentricon and Exterra, use growth regulators to stop the worker termites from molting (shedding their skeleton), thus killing them slowly. As the workers die, the colony dies. The workers feed the other clusters of termites and groom them for parasites. This system is safe for children and animals, because the monitors are locked and secured. The system used by our company is Exterra. 

Wood Treatment

TERMITE TREATMENT METHODS IN WESTERN COUNTRIES

The termite treatment methods for subterranean species is different. They live in colonies away from the infested wood that they consume. 

In case of subterranean termites’ treatment, the inspector puts on some monitoring stations. 
When the subterranean termites’ movement is confirmed in the area they put the bait devices in their place. These bait devices include toxins that the worker termites carry to the nests with them where their swarm members consume these toxins and are extinguished.

The infested wood spots are also covered with termiticide sprays and direct injections of termiticides in the wood. However, they are only helpful in controlling further damage to areas under termite attack. 

To permanently destroy the subterranean termites’ nests, carefully placed bait stations are absolutely imperative. Once these bait stations are removed they do not provide immunity against any future termite attacks.

Veteran termite inspectors and fumigation companies also treat the soil in and around the infested property. They put termite-killing toxins in the soil around the whole place to create a whole barricade in case the subterranean termites ever return. However, these toxins are not dangerous for plantation in and around your house.

The timing of termite treatment also matters in how effective the treatment will be in controlling the termite infestation. This does not imply that termite treatments are seasonal, but sometimes, like in rainy seasons, the fumigators normally do not advise starting a treatment. 

The reason is that all termiticides or gas sprays or toxins of bait devices will be washed away by the rain water and the treatment will not be as useful and effective in the long run.
